Brahmavadini was the title attributed to women scholars, who dedicated their lives to the pursuit of knowledge and the study of the Vedas. Some were unmarried, living as ascetics and independent of their fathers, brothers or male counterparts. It is an important pilgrim centre and the site of the famous Thanumalayan Temple. There is an Anjaneya, (or Hanuman), statue which stands at 22 feet (6.7 m) and is carved of a single granite block. It is one of the tallest statues of its type in India. There are two important festivals, one in Markazhi (December/January) and the other in Chiththirai (April/May). During the Markazhi festival, on the 9th day the deities are taken out in procession around the streets on three festival cars. According to this system, places were established where Gurus and Shishyas used to live together at one place called Ashrams.During the Vedic days, the education mainly consisted of teaching of Vedas, Sanskrit Hymns and Ritual Practices. The Vedas mainly used Sanskrit language which later on became the chief language for classical teaching and literatures.
